MIU: A SAFE WORKPLACE WITH P.O.S.H by Nurul Iffah Abd Wahab & Nurul Norfarain Kari, Human Resource
MIU has appointed the new committee members of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Internal Complaints Committee early this year to combat and ensure that all employees, students, trainees, and learners who are part of MIU are protected and safe from any sexual harassment conducts. The HR Department has organized an online talk on awareness to educate MIU staff on the Act and Policy conducted in March 2022.
The talk presented by Maheran Mohamed, the Chairman of the Committee who is also a senior lecturer at MIU with a Law background mentioned that under the Section 2 of the Employment Act 1955, sexual harassment is any unwanted conduct of a sexual nature, whether verbal, nonverbal, visual, gestural or physical, directed at a person which is offensive or humiliating or is a threat to his well-being, arising out of and in the course of his employment.
The Policy on Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal of Sexual Harassment at Workplace prepared by the HR Department has been made available to all staff. The policy does not discriminate and will protect all despite their gender, age, race, nationality, and religion.
Article 4 of the Code of Practice on the Prevention and Eradication of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace proclaims that having an establishment such as the MIU POSH Internal Complaint Committee within MIU would be the most effective way to deal and tackle the sexual harassment issues and combat them through preventive and redress mechanisms at the institution level.
